The True Spirit of Football

On Sunday, 18 May, the South East Juniors held its “Spirit of Football” round.  Players from all teams wore green arm bands to remind them of the true spirit that is required when playing footy.

In the Under 11 match between Berwick and Beaconsfield, Berwick player Will Curtain was carried off the field late in the 4th quarter with a suspected broken leg. After his team mates cheered him off the field, and the game was complete, both teams gathered in the middle of the field where both coaches addressed the players. Each coach awarded a player on the opposing team with the “Spirit of Football” medal for playing the game in the right spirit. Congratulations to Berwick player; Daniel Taylor, who was awarded the medal by the Beaconsfield coach.

What happened next was a remarkable display of the spirit this round represents. As Will lay on the stretcher, still with the paramedics assessing him, Daniel approached Will and gave him his medal.

Now if that is not in the right spirit, I don’t know what is.

Well done Daniel!  We hope Will has not broken his leg and will be back on the park soon with his mates.
